  2. Mission:“The Ardmore Public Library connects people with ideas and supports lifelong learning by providing reliable information resources, a well-rounded book collection, and other materials and programs that foster a literate, informed and culturally aware community.”

Beginnings In 1903, Andrew Carnegie donated $15, 000 to build a Public Library in Ardmore, Indian Territory “There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration.” -Andrew Carnegie

  4. First Structure The new Library opens October 1, 1906 on Stanley SW between E and F Streets

  9. Governance Adapted from Ardmore City Ordinances: Sec. 24. Library board • There shall be a library board, which shall consist of six members. Five of the members shall be appointed by the mayor with approval of the commission for terms of three years; and the city manager shall be an ex officio member of the board. At least two appointive members shall be women. • The library board shall have exclusive control of expenditure of all moneys collected and placed to the credit of the library, and shall be accountable for all money spent. • The library board may receive gifts or bequests of money, other personal property and real estate for the benefit of the public libraries. • The library board shall have supervision and control of all the public libraries of the city, and shall appoint a qualified head librarian. • The library board shall submit an annual report to the commission and to the city manager

  10. Funding • Revenue collected from local sales tax • State Aid Administered through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries • Endowments: Interest and royalty income from library capital and trust funds • Income generated from sale of assets – photo copies and book sales
