WORLD YOUTH DAYS 1986 - Rome, Italy 1987 - Buenos Aires, Argentina 1989 - Santiago de Compostela, Spain 1991 - Częstochowa, Poland 1993 - Denver, United States (OCY begins WYD Pilgrimage) 1995 - Manila, Philippines 1997 - Paris, France 2000 - Rome, Italy 2002 - Toronto, Canada 2005 - Cologne, Germany 2008 - Sydney, Australia 2011 - Madrid, Spain

  4. The Franciscan Church of St. Bonaventure WYD 2011 • Pilgrim Applicant Expectations • Completion of 20 hrs of volunteer service at the Parish • before June 1 • Participation in all FOUR World Youth Day Formation Sessions hosted by the OCY (Beginning in January)

  5. PURPOSE OF EXPECTATIONS • To prepare pilgrims for the pilgrimage • To build community among pilgrims The OCY Formation is for EVERYONE…… • Traveling to Spain with us • Traveling to Spain separately • Staying at home and celebrating locally

OCY Formation Program Outline 3 major gatherings prior to WYD • Session One - “We have set our hope on the living God.” (1 Tim 4:10) • Session Two “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mk 10:17) • Session Three “Rooted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.” (cf Col 2:7) 1 gathering after WYD • Session Four “Continue to live your lives in Him” (Col 2:6) • Reflecting on pilgrimage experiences • Spreading your renewed faith • Encounter Christ and Church daily

  7. UPON COMPLETION OF FORMATION • We continue to live our lives, renewed and strengthened • Rooted in our faith in God • Continually hoping in Him • Follow Christ’s callto love and serve

The difference between a PILGRIM & a TOURIST • 1.  Pilgrims are on a journey towards God Tourists are on a journey to see a new culture • 2.  Pilgrims invest themselves; they listen to people, they share their thoughts with others, they are open to Jesus and St. Francis speaking to them through different people and places.   Tourists try to remain untouched on a deep level by their experiences. • 3.  There is a desire that the pilgrim will be affected by the pilgrimage  Tourists try to remain detached and unaffected by their experiences; they are observers, not participants in the journey • 4.  Community is formed for pilgrims and by pilgrims Community is not always formed for or by tourists

Important Notes • The Franciscan Church of St. Bonaventure Pilgrims are being hosted in Madrid by the Conventual Franciscans during the pilgrimage in the College of San Bonaventura (a High School in Madrid) • These accommodations will be VERY simple • At the end of the pilgrimage we will have 2 nights in a hotel in Central Madrid and free time to explore Madrid

MONDAY, AUGUST 15 • Arrival into Madrid • Bus to College of San Buenaventura (SB) • DAY THREE . TUESDAY, AUGUST 16 • Open WYD Liturgy • Evening – Return to SB for a night devoted to Witness of the Life of St. Francis • DAY FOUR . WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17 • WYD activities • Evening with the entire Franciscan Family

THURSDAY, AUGUST 18 • Catechesis and WYD activities • Welcome for Pope Benedict XV1 • Eucharistic Adoration at SB throughout the night • Each group will sign-up for one hour • DAY SIX . FRIDAY, AUGUST 19 • Catechesis and WYD activities • Evening Stations of the Cross • DAY SEVEN . SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 • Morning Mass with the Minister General • Departure for Cuatro Vientos for the overnight Vigil with the Pope • 7 Km walk from SB • DAY EIGHT . SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 • Morning - Final Mass • Pilgrims return from vigil site • Evening of fraternity - Franciscan Festival of Nations

MONDAY, AUGUST 22 • Final goodbyes at SB • Bus to Hotel Regente in Central Madrid • Free afternoon in Madrid • DAY TEN . TUESDAY, AUGUST 23 • Breakfast at hotel • Free Day in Madrid • DAY ELEVEN . WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24 • Breakfast at hotel • Free morning in Madrid • Flight from Madrid –Toronto

  13. The Franciscan Church of St. Bonaventure and Connaissance Travel and Tours11-Day pilgrimage . August 14-24, 2011 WYD Package • 7 nights in The College of San Bonaventura in Madrid, Spain (High School), 2 nights in Hotel Regente in Madrid, Spain (Double Occupancy Only) • Flights, hotel accommodations and transfers to and from hotel and high school • Registration and solidarity fees for World Youth Day • Participation in WYD events including opening ceremonies/mass, catechetical sessions, youth festival,overnight vigil/final mass, local transportation during thesedays • OCY Formation Sessions and follow up meetings • Special WYD items; WYD Bag and other various items

  14. TOTAL COST • *$2200 per participant • *Price listed is estimate only due to airfare fluctuations and currency adjustments • The WYD group is welcome to fundraise at our parish to offset our costs • Those who commit to serving 10 additional hours of community service at our Parish upon our return will have their $260.00 - WYD Registration Fee paid for by the Parish

  15. REGISTRATION • Total St. Bonaventure group size: 20 pilgrims • Registration open NOW! SIGN UP TODAY. • $200 deposit must be submitted immediately • Pilgrims must be at least 18 years of age at time of departure • All pilgrims will be required to sign a ‘Code of Conduct’ before Departure • Pilgrims 17 years of age may apply if they are in Gr. 12. However, only 6 pilgrims 17 years of age will be admitted • Pilgrims who are minors will be required to submit a notarized letter from both parents giving permission for them to participate in this pilgrimage

  16. Too Young to go to Madrid? • WYD Regional Celebration in Canada will run concurrently with WYD Spain August 19-21, 2011 - Martyrs’ Shrine • We want to arrange a group to go! • Participants must be 14 – 25 years • Cost $60.00 for food & travel • Accommodations - Tents
