  2. Colic • Colic is a disease that affects a horse’s Gastro-intestinal tract(GI tract).

  3. Causes of Colic • Generally caused by obstruction in the digestive tract • Twisting of intestines(aka-twisted gut)

  4. Symptoms of Colic • Severe abdominal pain • Uneasiness or restlessness • Looking at flank region • Getting up and down often • Kicking at belly • Sweating • Bloat • Rolls often • Increased pulse and respiration rate

  5. Prevention of Colic • Follow de-worming program • Feed in small amounts several times a day rather than 1 large feeding. • Check teeth twice a year • Eliminate mouth disorders • Eliminate chewing disorders

  6. Treatment of Colic • Surgery • Call vet immediately • Until vet arrives: • Make horse walk • Do not allow horse to roll
