  1. Library Workshop for BEd Students January 2012

  2. Outline • Warm up: Finding a Particular Article • Database in Focus - ERIC • Another Educational Resource Example – ProQuest Education Databases • RefWorks • Google Scholar

  3. HKIEd Library Websitehttp://www.lib.ied.edu.hk Search for books, journals, media resources Essential tips: make sure you are familiar with the HKALL, the request / recall system, library delivery service between the Tai Po MMW Library and Town Centre branch, and understand how to read the location codes (e.g. MMW Lib Book)

  4. Finding a Particular Article • Is this article available in the Library? • There are more than one way to check whether we have a particular article. The simplest way is to check the Library catalogue by journal title (not the article title) • E.g. • Sadler, P. M. & Good, E. (2006). The impact of self- and peer-grading on student learning. Educational Assessment, 11(1), 1-31. doi:10.1207/s15326977ea1101_1

  5. Search the Library catalogue to see if we have the print copy and / or electronic copy of the Journal

  6. We may have more than one database providing access to the same journal but they may contain issues for different years – and some of them use an embargo period (e.g. latest 12 months not available)

  7. E-Journals – if you are off-campus and only interested in online availability • Search by Keywords • Browse by Subject or Title

  8. Finding a Particular Article • Is this article available in the Library? • Sadler, P. M. & Good, E. (2006). The impact of self- and peer-grading on student learning. Educational Assessment, 11(1), 1-31. doi:10.1207/s15326977ea1101_1

  9. Why use e-database for information? • E-Database is an organized collection of scholarly information. • E-Databases contain update information of journal articles, book reviews, conference papers, and other academic materials. • E-Databases support flexible and in-depth search for journal title, article title, author, issue, volume, etc. • Use electronic databases to search for local and international literature. • Some databases provide the complete full text articles. • Other databases provide abstracts of the journal articles.
