  1. Jacques Cartier was a European explorer sponsored by France.

  2. France is a country located in the western region of the continent of Europe.

  3. His mission was to find a way west to the Pacific Ocean and to claim and colonize the New World for France.

  4. On his first voyage he discovered the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, which is located in present-day Canada near the city of Quebec.

  5. On his second voyage he explored the St. Lawrence River Valley and claimed this land for France.

  6. This was France’s first claim to the lands of the continent of North America.
