  2. About Jacques Cartier Jacques Cartier was an French explorer, Born in St. Marlo, Brittany on December 31st, 1491. Cartier was originally a respected mariner. He Married a member of the leading family, Mary Catherine des Granches. He had frequent appearances in baptismal registers as a witness, which gave him a good name.

  3. Cartier the Explorer Cartier had 3 voyages. The first was in 1534, King Francis I of France sent him to the eastern coast if North America. He was to search for gold, riches, spices and a passage to Asia. He had 2 ships and 61 men. And captured 2 Indians The send voyage was the following year, where the 2 Indians guided him. They navagated to St. Lawence and to Quebec. Cartier had 3 ships and 110 men. He didn’t do as well this time and angered and captured some of the Iroquois chiefs. The 3rd voyage started in 1541 with 5 ships. During this voyage Cartier lost his reputation and ended up sneaked away during the night.

  4. Cartier’s Route Cartier traveled along the west coast of Newfoundland, where he discovered Prince Edward Island. This map shows the route Cartier took in two of his voyages.

  5. Findings Importance Cartier’s exploration was state- funded. Cartier located entrance to St. Lawrence and he estimated natural and human resources in Canada Cartier named Canada. He also discovered the St Lawrence Bay. Since Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon, Cartier had the first documented attempt at settling North America.
