  2. Jacques Cartier • Inclusive years of exploration?- First voyage was in 1534; second voyage was in 1535 • Where and when was he born?- He was born in 1491 in the French seaport town of Saint-Malo • What country funded the Exploration?- France • Who sent the Explorer?- King of France • What was the goal of the exploration?- The king wanted Cartier to discover the Northwest Passage. He also wanted Cartier to claim wealth in the New World.

  3. Jacques Cartier • Describe what was achieved. What lands did he explore or find? Conquer?- He explored Canada. He first landed in Newfoundland and then explored the Strait of Belle Isle. • Who were the natives living there first?- They met a friendly tribe of natives, the Micmacs, and traded with them. • What were the consequences of the exploration? How did the exploration affect the work and knowledge of the world?- The land they were claiming troubled the local natives because they believed the land belonged to them. While on the exploration, many men became ill with scurvy but the natives helped the Frenchman, showing them how to brew tea from cedar that could stop the disease. Following the exploration, Cartier had some of the Indians return to France so that they could share with the king the marvels they saw in the western lands

  6. Jacques Cartier • What did you learn about history from studying about your explorer?- That the French played a role in discovering Canada, especially when Spain and Portugal were the major powers in world explanation. Also, they also showed how they learned from and got along with the native Indians. • What did you find interesting about this Explorer?- I thought it was interesting that he was willing to work with the natives and that he wanted to take them back to France to share their findings with the king versus simply conquering the Indians. • Describe the ways this person has been honored - He discovered a bay which he named for St. Lawrence. Mapmakers later named a river, gulf and major seaway for the saint. • Provide any additional information about your explorer – He made three voyages to Canada but on the third voyage he was the navigator, not captain. After that, Cartier never went to sea again. He was 66 years old when he died.
