  2. Early Life • Born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930 • Received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering form Purdue University in 1955

  3. Early Military Career • Served as a naval aviator from 1949-1952 • Joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) which later became NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) • Served as a research pilot at NASA’s Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB, CA

  4. Experimental Pilot • Was the project pilot on the X-15 aircraft, the first plane to fly 4000 mph • Has flown over 200 different models of aircraft, including jets, rockets, helicopters, and gliders

  5. Astronaut Armstrong • Transferred to astronaut status in 1962 and commanded the Gemini 8 mission which performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space

  6. Lunar Mission • Commanded Apollo 11, the first manned lunar mission • First man to land an aircraft on the moon and first to step on the moon’s surface

  7. After NASA • Served as a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnati • Is currently the Chairman of the Board of AIL systems in New York, an electronic systems company.

  8. Honors and Awards • Has been decorated by 17 countries • Presidential Medal of Freedom winner • Congressional Space Medal of Honor • Explorer’s Club Medal • Goddard Memorial Trophy • NASA Distinguished Service Medal • Harmon International Aviation Trophy • And dozens more
