Biography • Born on 3rd April 1770 • The landscape deeply affected his imagination and he developed a great love of nature • He lost his parents at a very young age and domestic problems ended up separating Wordsworth from his sister who was disabled • He studied at Cambridge University • On a vacation through Europe he had an affair with a lady named Annette Vallon with whom he had an illegitimate child named Anne Caroline • Stimulated by his contact with nature he wrote his first masterpiece ‘Lyrical Ballads’ • In 1798-99 he spent time with his sister where he wrote many poems • Later on in life he got married and he and his wife Mary Hutchinson looked after his sister for the last 20 years of her life

5. Analysis “Lines Written In Early Spring” shows Wordsworth’s discontent with the ways of man by comparing it to the ways of nature. The quote “It grieves my heart to think, What man has made of man” creates a sense of loss throughout the poem. This tone of guilt and loss is apparent in many of Wordsworth's works. The fourth verse expresses Wordsworth’s views on freedom in relation to nature, and the use of adjectives emphasises the tone of the text The use of first person gives a sense of loneliness and solitude and other techniques such as rhyme, poetry imagery and personification also adds to the style and purpose of the poem.
