  1. Ocean Floor Features

  2. Continental Margins • Shallower portions of the ocean floor • Is the boundary between the ocean floor and the continents

  3. Continental Shelf • Edge of the continent that is covered by ocean water • Varies in width • Effected by sea level

  4. CONTINENTAL SHELF

  5. Continental Slope • Steep incline at the edge of the continental shelf • Features that are found on the shelf • Canyons • Turbidity currents – currents that carry sediments and cause more sloping • Continental rise – raised edge at the base

  6. SHELF/SLOPE

  7. Deep Ocean Basin • Ocean Floor – oceanic crust

  8. Trenches • Deep valley in the ocean basin • Caused by tectonic features • Deepest part on the ocean

  9. Abyssal Plains • Flat floor in the ocean

  10. Mid-Ocean Ridges • Underwater mountain chain • New seafloor is created here • Because of the making of new crust, the crust breaks into series of faults called Fracture Zones

  11. Seamounts • Isolated volcanic mountain • If they rise above the ocean surface it forms an island (Hawaii)

  12. SEAMOUNT

  13. Guyots • Old seamounts that have sunk beneath the ocean surface http://www.coast-nopp.org/visualization_modules/physical_chemical/basin_coastal_morphology/principal_features/deep_ocean/seamounts/seamounts.html

  14. SMOKERS

  15. SEA FLOOR

  16. submersible • Underwater Research Vessel

  17. the Hard Suit 2000. • A new suit that lets divers diver deeper, faster and stay longer

  18. Sonar • Sonar is a device that is used to detect objects through sound waves.
