  1. Dr. Karen Darragh Consultant Anaesthetist RIE Chair LNC Lothian

  2. Overview What is the LNC? What can it do for me? What does it do for doctors (and dentists) more generally? What can I do for the LNC?

  3. What’s an LNC then? A local negotiating committee Does what it says on the tin… Came into being with the formation of Trusts, as a vehicle for representing doctors and dentists at local level in discussions with the employer Represents all doctors and dentists of whatever grade or background directly employed by NHS Lothian

  4. Isn’t the LNC a BMA thing? Many or most LNC members are members So... what if I’m not a member? We will still advise and represent you.....Upto the point where access to BMA employment advisers would be needed, or information only BMA members have access to. BMA membership is more than just employment advice (And other unions are available….)

  5. What can it do for me? Assist with problems or queries about your job plan and the job planning process; Other employment issues surrounding expenses or leave. We advise on issues around appraisal and revalidation and assist with any disciplinary issues ….but that can often lead to a need for BMA (or other union) staff assistance or legal advice We can however point you to the relevant guidance(s) on all the above, i.e. “Help you to help yourself”.

  6. What can I do for myself? Keep an hours diary, especially in the weeks or months leading up to job planning Understand your contract and local policy Understand appraisal and revalidation DON’T whatever you do access your own, your family’s or friends TRAK record!

  7. The wider LNC role Ensuring national contracts are properly implemented at local level Meeting with management to agree local policies Helping to run the discretionary point process Feeding issues at local level up to national (BMA) structures

  8. What can I do for the LNC? Before and during asking us for help, educate yourself and have information to hand, but don’t wait until a problem is a big problem to get in touch. Get involved...Training is available if you wanted to join the LNC to represent colleagues.Consider becoming a discretionary point marker before you are eligible (it’s great training). Encourage any juniors you work with to get involved

  9. HELP?! Your current LNC office bearers are Karen Darragh, Chair of LNC karen.darragh@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk Ewan Olson, Consultant Microbiologist RIE, Deputy chair Sunit Rane, Consultant Gynaecologist SJH, Hon Secretary Liz Roebuck, Paediatric Dentist, Administrative Responsibility
