  3. Definition of a Rate A rate is a type of ratio used to compare different types of quantities. • Several key words imply rates; • per a miles per b hours • For a dollars for b pounds • In a meters in b seconds • On a miles on b gallons of gas

  4. Examples • There are 130 calories in 8 snack crackers • During a bad storm there was 2 inchesof rain in 6 hours • Jill’s portfolio changed by -$2600 in 6 months

  5. Unit Rates A rate having a denominator of 1 unit is called a unit rate. For example: Write each rate as a unit rate and round to the nearest hundredth when necessary The jockey David Gall had 7396 wins in 43 years of riding A female speed skater skated 500m in 38sec. Find the rate in meters per second. Ceramic tile sells for $13.08 for a box of 12 tiles. Find the price per tile.

  6. Unit Cost A unit cost or unit price is the cost per 1 unit of something. Find the unit cost. Round your answer to three decimal places when necessary. Dove liquid body wash costs $3.49 for 12 oz. 10 lb of potting soil for $1.70 30 lb of potting soil for $5.10 Which is the better buy?

  7. Application #1 Compute the amount of carbohydrate per fluid ounce for each soda. Then determine which has the greatest amount of carbohydrate per fluid ounce.

  8. Application #2 According to the National Institutes of Health, a platelet count below 20,000 per microliter of blood is considered a life-threatening condition. Suppose a patient’s test results yield a platelet count of 13,000,000 for 100 microliters. Write this as a unit rate. Does the patient have a life-threatening condition?

  9. Application #3 The population of Mexico increased steadily by 22 million people in a 10-yr period. Compute the rate representing the increase in the population per year. The population of Brazil increased steadily by 10.2 million in a 5-year period. Compute the rate representing the increase in the population per year. Which country has a greater rate of increase in population per year?
