Enhancing Automated Burst Trigger Scheme at the Magnetopause for Improved Data Transmission

This study focuses on optimizing the automated burst trigger scheme at the magnetopause, particularly during Dusk and Dawn periods. By increasing the number of magnetopause crossings per day and enhancing data collection strategies, we aim to maximize the efficacy of 15-minute burst data storage, allowing up to 16 days of recording. The goal is to automate the selection of burst intervals to reduce the need for SITL intervention. We also address inefficiencies in current THEMIS 10-minute and MMS 10-second burst buffers and propose solutions for data gap patching.

  1. Improving the automated burst trigger scheme at the magnetopause DUSK Subsolar DAWN # of magnetopause crossings per day July 1 Dec 27 Total duration of magnetopause crossings per day (in minutes) 15 mins/day (in minutes) • - With the scheme of being able to store up to 16 days of 15-minute burst data, it is likely that • all MP crossings can be transmitted. • This was based SITL selection of optimal burst interval for each magnetopause crossing. • Goal: Automate the burst interval selection to minimize SITL involvement. Can be done now!

  2. THEMIS 10-minute burst buffers are too long: Waste of burst data • MMS: 10s burst buffers will result in gaps in magnetopause interval: Need to patch gaps BGSM Ions (eV) VGSM Density FOM based on DBz
