Definitions: • Totalitarian- exercising control over the freedom, will, or thought of others • Dictator- a leader who controls his nation by force • Fascism- a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

  3. Dictators: a. Adolf Hitler - Germany, Nazi b. Benito Mussolini - Italy, Fascism c. Hideki Tojo - Japan, Totalitarian d. Josef Stalin - Soviet Union, Communism

  4. Factors to Rise of Dictators: • Political instability and economic devastation in Europe resulting from WWI • Some leaders took advantage of the state of uncertainty • Worldwide depression • High inflation prices were so high that people couldn’t afford to buy things • High war debt owed to Germany, Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to pay reparations, angering them

  5. Summary: Political and economic conditions in Europe following WWI led to the rise of fascism and to WWII. The rise of fascism threatened peace in Europe and Asia. Fascists dictators included Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo. Dictators led the countries that became known as the Axis Powers.
