In your modules, make a list of three points for each of the following social elements: • *When were the Middle Ages? • *What beliefs typify the times? • *What was the role of church? • *Whos did social power rest with? • *How were crime and punishment dealt with? • *List some important buildings/architecture of the times. • *List three important events of these times. • *Explain what feudalism was? • *Describe the life of a serf.

  8. Birth of the modern world.. • 1. Enlightenment and new ideas were generated at this time. • (human reason, church teaching, power of the monarchy) • 2. The nature and extent of the movement of people – voluntary and involuntary migration. • 3. The Industrial Age. (advances in medicine and manufacturing) • 4. European Imperialism. (Asia contact and trade)

  9. Refer to your e-text, page 4. Draw your own version of the concept map, “Ideas of The Enlightenment”, in your modules. Answer questions 1 and 2 as fully as you can from the information given.

  10. Why were these ideas challenging for the church? *they placed more reason on value and enquiry, rather than tradition. *The political power of the church was challenged by secularism…separation of church from Gov.

  11. New opportunities for peoeple… • *The concept of privilege was overturned…..people were no longer bound by the social rank they had been born to. • Enlightenment as a concept promoted that all people were born with the same basic rights.

  12. A Radical thinker…. • *Who was Jean-Jaques Rousseau? • *What was his view on the society of his time? • *What was the name of his famous book and what was it all about? • *What can you discover about the society of the time from the art?

  13. Liberty Leading the People – 1830, by Eugene Delacroix *HOW DOES THIS PAINTING REPRESENT THE NEW HOPE THAT THE FRENCH REVOLUTION GAVE THE ORDINARY PEOPLE?

  14. The painting represents liberty leading the people. “Liberty” is portrayed as a young and vital woman carrying the revolutionary flag and rifle. The light around her symbolises hope and positivity.
