  1. Full Review Process As a reminder, experiments may not commence, until you have received written notification from the IACUC office that the experiments have been approved. The protocol or modification (the “proposal”) is submitted to the IACUC by: Email (iacuc@einstein.yu.edu), or Interoffice mail (Van Etten 468). Please note that all original signatures will be required on final version of animal use protocol in order to obtain approval. The proposal is entered in the database and assigned a unique number. The Animal Welfare Officer abstracts the proposal for the “Summary” field in the database. At this time a determination is made as to whether the proposal must go to “Full Review” or if it is eligible for “Delegated Review”. A copy of the proposal is sent to the Review subcommittee (RSC) and the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) EH&S provides the RSC with their comments and/or request for revisions. Two weeks prior to IACUC monthly meeting, the RSC will meet to review proposal and determine what revisions may be required by the IACUC. One week prior to monthly meeting, copy of the proposal is sent to IACUC members. The IACUC meets (once a month - usually the third Wednesday of the month) and reviews the proposals. The IACUC decides if proposal should be tabled or if modifications are required to secure approval, base upon recommendation of RSC. Any one member and request that protocol be tabled. If IACUC votes that modifications are required to secure approval, the proposal is assigned to one or more reviewer(s). See Delegated Review Process. If protocol is tabled, it will be brought before the IACUC at a future meeting. After the meeting, the Animal Welfare Officer sends letter to PI outlining revisions required by the IACUC and EH&S. PI submits revision. Steps 5-13 are repeated. If revision address all concerns of IACUC and EH&S, the protocol is approved.

  2. Full Review Process • If the revisions addresses most of the IACUC’s major concerns, see step 12. • If revisions does not address major concerns of IACUC and EH&S, steps 14 and 15 are repeated. • Once IACUC approves the proposal, a letter is sent to the PI. • If at any point the PI fails to submit a revision, please see “ What happens if PI fails to submit revision?” below. What happens if PI fails to submit revision? • A reminder notice is sent to PI requesting revisions within two weeks. • If revision is not submitted a second reminder is sent requesting revision with one week. • If PI still fails to submit revision, proposal is considered “Withdrawn”. • PI will have to resubmit proposal and review process will start from beginning.
