  1. Be able to describe community media Be able to describe the purpose of community media

  2. What is a community?

  3. What communities do you belong to?

  4. What examples of community media do you think exists?

  5. Examples • Radio stations • Also satellite TV and Cable both have provided community media to have an outlet. • I.e. the Community Channel and Sangat TV

  6. Community media • Community media is any sort of media which is created and controlled by the community. Community media is different to commercial media or and to some extent public service media, because the purpose of community of community media is to reach out with those who are sidelined or marginalised by society and in some case ignored and excluded by the media.

  7. Who do you think these groups are?

  8. Community media the purpose • Community media can take many different forms, and be applied to many different communities from here to the developing world . It provides people a voice, and also the means to control and produce their own content and media, on issues which would not always make headline news. • Why would these topics not make the news?

  9. Community media not commercial enough • Think about it most news or media is driven by selling papers or getting advertising for TV, most communities and their issues would not pull in the advertising to make it possible • The advantage of community media is that this means unlike the mainstream media, which are owned and operated by a parent company, community media is independent and is in charge of what they want to report and does not have to worry about market forces i.e. advertising revenue.

  10. Community media the purpose • To provide ordinary people the opportunity to be involved in creating media, and become citizen journalists. • To communicate local news and information. • Community media is not just about local news, it can also be framed around a national, or international issue for that community i.e. The Pakistani Appeal or the Sikh community channel reporting about the Birmingham riots.

  11. Birmingham riots and community media a case study • http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/aug/10/birmingham-riots-sangat-tv • http://www.embertelevision.co.uk/online-video/hyperlocal-vs-global-sangat-tv-and-the-birmingham-riots/ • http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-14493399

  12. What community media does • It create access to media production for non-traditional groups i.e. minority groups i.e. Gay groups, ethic minorities, gypsies, religious groups, immigrants • It challenge dominant representations and agendas. • This means it challenges representations of these groups portrayed by the media and also the media organisations own agenda i.e. the main stream media marginalises these groups and can frame news and information. Mainstream media can also contain bias. Consider how the Daily Mail reports about immigrants.

  13. Activity • I want you to search newspapers and find stories about minority groups, then feedback how these stories have been framed, who is present in these stories who is excluded, how has the minority group been framed, is their voice present?
