This unit investigates the vital components of healthy outdoor environments, focusing on biodiversity, introduced species, and assessing the quality of air, water, and soil. Biodiversity encompasses genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity, playing a crucial role in sustaining ecosystems and enhancing productivity. By examining specific case studies like Wilsons Promontory, we will identify threats to biodiversity and evaluate environmental indicators. Students will engage in hands-on activities to test environmental quality and understand the interconnectedness of life within natural habitats.

Unit 4Indicators or healthy outdoor environments In this unit we will explore biodiversity, introduced species , as well as examining how water, air and soil can be observed and test to indicate adequacy and quality.
Biodiversity Biodiversity refers to the variety of life and its interrelationships within natural environments Genetic diversity =range of genes. Species diversity= variety of species (number and different types of trees) Ecosystem diversity= variety of habitats (eg coastal, alpine, agricultural, urban woodland), natural communities and ecological processes in the biosphere. Australia has high levels of biodiversity
Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. For example, - A large number of plant species means a greater variety of crops.- Greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms.- Healthy ecosystems can better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters. Why is biodiversity important?
Work task 2 Unit 4 Wilsons Promontory was considered for National Park status due to it’s dramatic landscapes and significant biodiversity. Investigate and describe The biodiversity at Wilsons prom. Specific threats to its biodiversity. How would you describe the quality of the soil, water and air. What methods could be used to test each components and therefore compared against standards.
