  2. Definition A child is being bullied when she/he is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more children. The bully is usually seeking attention and believes he has some kind of power

  3. Types of bullying • Parental bullying- your parents threatening or hitting you when you haven’t done something wrong • Physical bullying – Someone picking on you in a physical way (punching, kicking ect) • Verbal bullying- Someone teasing you or spreading rumours about you to others • Emotional bullying- Someone playing on your emotions to get their way even if it puts you in a negative light. Someone excluding you • Cyber bullying- text messages, emails, facebook ect

  4. Bullying can happen anywhere. • It can mean being attacked, mocked, humiliated, threatened, made to feel worthless or hurt in other ways. • It can be face to face, by rumour, text or the Internet. • It is unacceptable and needs to be dealt with quickly. • Some children become bullies because they have been bullied themselves.

  5. Are these examples of physical or verbal bullying? • Punching someone in the face • Calling a kid a “nerd” • Saying “Hey four eyes!” to a kid with glasses • Tripping someone in the hallway • Pointing and laughing at the new boy when he walks in the room • Telling someone that you are going to punch them • Threatening • Spreading rumours • Stealing a boys math book because you lost yours

  6. How bullying affects others • Families- parents, siblings and grandparents become very upset when the child is bullied • Teachers -bullying destroys respect. Teachers can blame themselves for failing to protect the child. • The school- there could be legal action that needs to be taken or the media could put the school in a negative light • Peers- friends can feel scared, powerless, guilty and shameful for doing nothing.

  7. What to do if you are being bullied 1. be confident, bullies are more likely to leave you alone if you are not afraid. 2. don’t retaliate this will only get YOU into trouble. 3. don’t be afraid to tell an adult. 4. don’t let nasty remarks get to you. 5. stay happy and proud of who you are. 6. remember you are not weak, you have the right to speak out and get the help you need!

  8. 7. people will understand how you feel, be it your mother your father your grand-parents someone WILL understand. 8. who said just because what they say hurts makes it true? No one! 9. if you are a victim of physical bullying it is vital you tell an adult as this form of bullying can do A LOT of damage. 10. no matter what- keep your courage up, and sustain your happiness. 11. telling someone won’t make it worse - if you tell someone it will be dealt with 12. don’t let them get to you, and remember that they are no different from you on the inside and don’t let THEM forget that either!

  9. Why are some bullied? • Wrong place at the wrong time- Someone might be angry and feel like punching or belittling someone and they pick on whoever is around them • Genetic factors- being disabled, clumsy, small or tall, your race, teeth, nose, bad eyes or even being talented are all genetic examples that some use as reason for bullying others. • Personality- if you are sensitive, compassionate, sympathetic or even angry bullies could wish to exploit that. • Environmental factors- certain religions/sports are accepted in some areas and others are not always. Being different makes you more vulnerable

  10. Who you can talk to if you are being bullied: • To your parents • To your teachers • To the schools guidance counselor (Mr. Gericke) • To God
