  8. 2.1 Vision RRC Vision? Now, that is what I call a vision! Vision with action RRC.AP Strategy 2 RRC Vision • Enhance Strategic Alliance with key players in assessment arena • Increase core competence in data/information integration towards sustainable development • Develop intellectual leadership in the development of sustainable development strategies and action plans.

  9. 2.2 Vision WSSD 2002: Johannesburg Plan of Implementation calls upon countries to implement National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDS) by 2005 through establishment of National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) Partnership: MDGs, WSSD2002 and International Environmental Governance (IEG) recommended for a strong partnership at national, capacity building Millennium Development Goals (MDG): Millennium Summit adopted the MDGs  Goal 7 sets a target for reversal of loss of environmental resources by 2015 Needs: Quantify the State of the Environment (air / water/ land) with an agreed set of indicators Needs: Assistance to establish NCSD for NSDS at the national and sub-regional levels Needs: Partnership with international agencies, governmental agencies, civil society for capacity building Facts RRC.AP Strategy 2

  15. 2.8 NSDS National Sustainable Development Strategy SD RRC.AP Strategy • A mechanism: integrate principles of sustainable development into national policies and strategies • Build on: existing social, economic and environmental policies • Process involves: situation analysis, formulation of policies and action plans, implementation, monitoring and regular review • Institutionalized the process: consultation, negotiation, mediation, and consensus building 2

  16. 2.9 NCSD National Council for Sustainable Development • Role: • A multistakeholder’s forum: representatives from government, business and civil society • Facilitate preparation and implementation of NSDS • Enabling broad partnership and facilitate the focused participation • Play key role in promoting awareness and information dissemination on sustainable development • Structure: • Comprise of Chair, Council/Board, Committee and Subcommittees and Secretariat • Chair: A head of government to influence policy and decision making • Council: Government and Non-government representatives (40:60) • Government representatives: Planning, finance and environment ministries RRC.AP Strategy 2
