Skills Overcoming skills barriers Youth training In emerging fields: Achievements In the past decade: 10 614 youths have sought their first job with NSF 4 589 youths trained in emerging areas In 2011 alone: 2 945 youths have sought their first job with NSF 706 youths trained in emerging areas • Emerging technologies • Innovation in Management • Eco-innovation • Energy Challenges • Quality, environment and risk prevention • REACH Legislation and also • Personal / Professional skills

Overcoming barriers to access companies For Youth: Ongoing exchange with companies: to better understand current and future challenges to ensure they understand NSF’s mission and respond to the needs of youths To keep them abreast of latest issues regarding youth employment, labour issues… For Companies: • Access to Companies • Scholarship programme funded by companies for practical in-company training • NSF trains youths in emerging fields • Youths then implement learnings in host organisations

Overcoming barriers to companies Achievements in the past decade During 2011 700 youths integrated in companies 60% hired after work placement, 40% of whom within 1 year after work placement 307 / 800 companies collaborating 70% fidelity rate Over € 3.6 million invested in scholarship fund • Access to Companies • 5 102 youths integrated in companies • 70% hired after work placement • 850 organisations contribute to scholarship programme • 46 organisations accompanied by NSF to improve management • Over €20 million invested in scholarship fund

Overcoming mobility barriers Activities: Achievements 355 youths have participated in International Work Placement programmes in the past 6 years 80 in 2011 alone Estimated 100 via Global Mobility Programme • Work with local companies which have international implantations • Work with companies and organisations abroad • Global Mobility Programme Miguel De La Quadra Salcedo (under development) • Mobility

Overcoming indifference Activities Achievements Establishment of the ICARUS Youth Think Tank Active social networking – 70 000 visits on NSF blog; 120 348 website visits (2011) Ongoing networking with companies, including company visits for youth Participation in the Basque Strategy for employment Participation in the Life Long Learning legislation • Identify youth problems with youth • Establish peer-to-peer networks for support and collaboration • Put a human face on companies • Work with public authorities to include youth issues in strategic planning as a cornerstone for competitiveness • Society’s indifference to the situation of youth

What works In overcoming barriers to youth employment, we have found that is fundamental to: • Have a strong initial diagnosis; understand the situation • Focus on local and regional levels, working together with key stakeholders • Anticipate change before it occurs • Good Governance, and lead by example
