CATTLE BOOM • Texas Longhorn • Tough meat, but could travel long distances on little water and survive on grass alone • Cattle • Railroad Makes for easy transportation to industrial cities • Loss of buffalo means huge need for cattle meat • New and open land for settlers because N. Americans and buffalo have been moved

  4. HOMESTEAD ACT (1862) • FREE LAND (160 Acres) • Offered to any citizen/ intended citizen • Gave land leftover from land that N.Americans did not want/ taken from them.

Farming Environment • Harsh Weather and Hard Work • Both blizzards and hot summers • Swarms of grasshoppers • Prairie fires • Hard work was demanded out of everyone in the family • Scarce resources • Water short in supply • Trees-lack of wood for fuel or building materials • Lived in Sod houses
