  9. What is a definition? A definition is a statement which should include the general classification of a term plus the specific characteristics that make the term different from other members of the class. A term = A general class word + specific characteristics

  10. Example One: A giraffe is an animal with a very long neck. A term: A giraffe A general class word: animal Specific characteristics: A very long neck

  11. Example Two: A hammer is a tool that breaks things or hits nails. A term: A hammer A general class word: tool Specific characteristics: Breaks things or hits nails
