REVIEW of Terms • Exegesis (from the Greekἐξήγησις from ἐξηγεῖσθαι 'to lead out') The goal of Biblical exegesis is to explore the meaning of the text which then leads to discovering its significance or relevance. • Eisegesis (from Greek εἰς "into") is the process of misinterpreting a text in such a way that it introduces one's own ideas, reading into the text. Author & Dates of Kings • DATE: • Compiled some time after capture of Judah by Babylonians in 586 BC [2Kings25] between 560 & 538 BC • Last event recorded was release of King Jehoiachin [597BC] • There was no mention of the fall of Babylon to Persia in 538 BC • AUTHOR: • Some scholars agree on Jeremiah as author: • Jeremiah stated in Jewish tradition of Talmud • Jeremiah could have written all but 2 Kings 25:27-30 possibly written by his disciples Nancy G Daniel-MSU Theology 2010

Chronicles Content • Chronicles was originally one book: • Events of Days, it was divided and named “Things Passed Over” by Greek translators or Septuagint, or LXX • Jerome gave it the title Chronicles • Chronicles is a duplication & supplement to Samuel & Kings.   18. Names • Rehoboam = "a people has enlarged” [Judah] • Jeroboam = "the people will contend” [Israel] • Ahijah = "brother of Jehovah (Yahu)” [prophet] • Abijah = "Jehovah is (my) father” [baby] • Abijam = "my father is the sea" or "Yah(u) is (my) father" Nancy G Daniel MSU Theology 2010

A few more names • Asa = "healer: injurious (?)" king of Judah, son of Abijam, father of Jehoshaphat • Jehoram or Joram = "Jehovah is exalted” • Ahaziah = "Jehovah (Yahu) holds (possesses)” • Jehu = "Jehovah is He” • Elijah = "my God is Jehovah" or "Yah(u) is God” • Jehoshaphat = "Jehovah has judged" Nancy G Daniel MSU Theology 2010
