  2. Note: We received an overwhelming interest to the Senior Promotion Information Session! Great feedback and excellent tips in going forward with future sessions. We have updated the PowerPoint slides (that were originally presented at the January 27, 2017 session) to include more information around the documents required for a senior promotion and the overall promotion process. Thank you.

  3. Academic Promotion … Academic promotion in the Faculty of Medicine recognizes the notable achievements of faculty members in their discipline and contributions to the University of Toronto.

  14. WHAT? What is a Senior Promotion? Senior promotion refers to promotion to the academic ranks of Associate Professor and full Professor .

  15. WHAT? Promotion is not granted as a reward for long-term service, but rather to recognize those who have excelled in specific aspects of the academic mission. Your academic activities (from the date of your last promotion) should showcase impact, importance and innovation at a national or international level.

  16. What? The successful candidate for promotion will be expected to have established a wide reputation in his or her field of interest, to be deeply engaged in scholarly work, and to show him or herself to be an effective teacher.

  19. WHAT? According to the University of Toronto Policy and Procedures Governing Promotions, promotion is based on accomplishments in scholarship: • Research • Creative Professional Activity (CPA) • Teaching • Administrative service to the University

  29. What should we discuss? Pre-Application Candidates are required to submit a Senior Promotion Pre-Application to the DFCM Department Promotions Committee (DPC) in order to obtain feedback regarding readiness for promotion.

WHO - Who can assist me? • Meet with your Chief/Director • Meet with the DFCM Chair’s office • Faculty that have received a senior promotion • Your Faculty Development Representatives • Talk to your peers/colleagues • Hospital administrations • The DFCM - Attend a WORKSHOP • Candidates have found the workshops to be most valuable and effective in completing a promotion dossier • Guest speakers (successful candidates) • Our videos! • Dossiersof successful candidates • Mentorship • A member of the DFCM Senior Promotions Committee is assigned to a candidate going forward

There may be differences in the timing of promotion because of competing responsibilitiesand other factors, i.e, around ‘wide reputation’, dissemination of work • Assistant Professor to Associate Professor • Usually a request for promotion prior to five years, since the last promotion is considered an accelerated promotion • On average 5-7 years • Associate to Full Professor: • Usually a request for promotion prior to five years, since the last promotion is considered an accelerated promotion • On average 10 years
