Investigations - ghana • Development of a Cell-Phone Based Seafood Market Information System (SMIS): Application to Tilapia – PU / KNUST • Collaboration with Farmerline, a private IT company • Data collection on fish quantities & prices • Workshop to train farmers on SMIS • Workshop to train women traders on SMIS • Identifying Local Strains of Oreochromisniloticus that are Adapted to Future Climate Conditions – VT / KNUST • Experiments to test the tolerance of the Volta strain and three wild populations of O. niloticus to increased temperature, decreased DO, and increased salinity

Investigations - ghana • Assessing Ghana’s National Aquaculture Training Needs and Capabilities in the Light of the National Aquaculture Development Plan – VT / KNUST • 3 workshops to assess aquaculture training needs at all levels • Facilitated, participatory workshops to collect data on current expertise levels, personnel numbers, qualifications in relevant institutions, etc • Develop matrices on development targets and current levels of performance versus required levels of expertise and needed resources e.g., skills, etc • Enhancing the Nutritional Value of Tilapia for Human Health – UAPB / KNUST • Study potential fish feed ingredients containing n-3 fatty acids for use in Nile tilapia diets in Ghana. • Feeding trials with Nile tilapia

Investigations - tanzania • Assessing the Nutritional Impact of Aquaculture Policy in Fish Farming Districts in Tanzania – PU / SUA • Household survey in selected fish farming communities • Data on individual characteristics as well as household and community variables such as dietary intake, illness, age, gender, land size, production of own food etc. • Value Chain Analysis of Farmed Nile Tilapia & African Catfish in Tanzania – PU / SUA • Survey of value chain actors • The farmers will receive training on pond construction, pond operations, record keeping, entrepreneurship and group management

Investigations– zanzibar, tanzania • Spat Collection and Nursery Methods for Shellfish Culture by Women – UHH / IMS • Coastal Women’s Shellfish Aquaculture Development Workshop – UHH / IMS • Spat collection to obtain stock for shellfish farms & tested to determine the best materials and timing for spat collectors / test nursery methods to rear the collected spat • Train women on above / share results of research • Training in bivalve shellfish culture methods • Develop action plan for further development of the small-scale bivalve industry
