  1. Deconstructing Propaganda Continued… Initial Task: In your notebook, consider the juxtaposition of the celebrities supporting vegetarianism (not eating meat) while they fondly pet their dogs. What does this intentional circumstance have to do with propaganda? Respond in a paragraph or so. Be prepared to share with the class. And…just in case…. Juxtaposition: the act or instance of placing two or more things side by side (so, for example, overlapping the celebrity talking about not eating animals with an image of a celebrity petting a dog). October 1st2009

  2. Today’s Game Plan: • Quick notebook reflection on PETA clip (5-10 minutes) • Deconstruct Pope/condoms audio clip • Compare/Contrast different strategies employed in the 3 propaganda clips. • Handout on Types of Propaganda • Read individually (5 minutes) • Discuss as full group. Objectives/Goals: Make inferences and draw conclusions based on explicit and implied information from texts. Critically consider and communicate the purpose of propaganda in context of the three propaganda samples. Acquire, understand, and use new vocabulary including the words: juxtaposition, propaganda, and deconstruction.

  3. Compare and Contrasting Propaganda:1. What function do the propaganda samples serve? What, if anything, do their audiences have in common?2. How does language make an impact in these samples?3. What is the relationship between fact and opinion in the samples?

  4. Types of Propaganda Scavenger Hunt 1. In your desk teams, search online (online newspapers, magazines, advertisements, news clips, radio clips, etc.) looking for examples of at least seven different types of propaganda. 2. Choose the types of propaganda you want to focus on. Try to find at least one example of each. Make sure you either “bookmark” or record your finds so that you can find them again. 3. Be prepared to share your best examples with the class – clearly labeled..

  5. What’s in store for Monday! Homework: *Finish reading the handout. Highlight or underline types of propaganda that most interests (or annoys!) you. *Bring in three propaganda samples, each representing a different propaganda type. Clearly identify each type. Monday: Propaganda Scavenger continued. Then, moving into investigation of classic propaganda.
