  1. Our SPOOKY SCIENCE LAB IS THIS FRIDAY! Are you ready?!?!?

  2. Activity #1Goblin GOO! What is it? The “goo” is actually a super cool mixture of water, Elmer’s glue or glue gel, and Borax laundry detergent.

  3. Activity #1Goblin GOO! How do I do it? Making “Goblin Goo” is easy! • In one bowl, Mix 4 oz. of glue with 4 oz. of warm water and stir. TIP! Use your empty glue bottle as a measuring cup. Fill it up with water, shake, and pour it into your bowl!

  4. Activity #1Goblin GOO! • Add food coloring if you want colored slime! • Continue to stir.

  5. Activity #1Goblin GOO! • SLOWLY Add 8 oz. of the Borax solution to the glue mixture. IMPORTANT! You must STIR and POUR at the same time!

  6. Activity #1Goblin GOO! • The slime will form immediately. Stir as much as you can, and then “smoosh” it with your hands until it starts to get sticky.

  7. Activity #1Goblin GOO! DON’T WORRY!! • There will be some water in the bowl. Just pour it out and keep smooshing!

  8. Activity #1Goblin GOO! • The goo gets better the longer you “smoosh” it!

  9. Activity #1Goblin GOO! • Put your goo in a baggie and store it in the refrigerator so it won’t mold and get nasty!

  10. Activity #1Goblin GOO! WHY DID THIS HAPPEN??!! Glue has an ingredient called polyvinyl acetate, or a liquid polymer. The Borax links all the polyvinyl acetate molecules to each other, creating one large, flexible polymer. This kind of slime will get stiffer and more like putty the more you play with it. What is a polymer? It is a really long line of molecules that are joined together in a special way. Some are flexible, like the bottom of your P.E. shoes. Others are hard, like the plastic bowl and spoon we use in our experiment.

  11. Gel Glue GOO Glitter GOO! F

  12. WARNINGS! and CLEAN UP!! LAB SINK— The water pressure in the lab sink is very powerful! 1. Do not remove the hose. 2. Do not turn it all the way up. 3. Work INSIDE the sink when you are filling your bottle and cleaning up.

  13. WARNINGS! and CLEAN UP!! CLEAN UP— This activity is fun but it is MESSY! • Do NOT put “Goo” pieces in the sink. Use the trash can. 2. Wipe out your bowl and clean your spoon with a paper towel first. 3. After you have wiped your items with a paper towel, rinse them off in the sink. • Dry them with a paper towel. • Pick up any “GOO” that accidentally got on the floor and throw it in the trash.

  14. WITCH’S BREW

  15. Activity #2Witch’s Brew! What is it? The Witch’s Brew is actually Hawaiian Punch with a very special ingredient. . . DRY ICE!!!

  16. Activity #2Witch’s Brew! What is DRY ICE? • Dry ice is actually not ice at all. It’s not even made of water. • It is solid CARBON DIOXIDE that is frozen at a temperature of -109.3 F! • Dry ice does not melt. Instead, it sublimates. • Sublimation means the solid never melts into a liquid. It changes from a solid straight into a gas. That’s why it’s called dry ice!

  17. Activity #2Witch’s Brew! What Is Dry Ice Used For Besides Keeping Things REALLY COLD? • Fog machines • Freezing off warts • Shipping medical specimens • It is the only substance cold enough to keep DIPPING DOTS from melting since they are made from liquid nitrogen! • CARBONATING and COOLING DRINKS LIKE HAWAIIAN PUNCH in our AWESOME LAB!!!

  18. Activity #2Witch’s Brew! • You will get a cup of punch with a small piece of dry ice in it. • DO NOT DRINK IT! Observe what happens. • When the CO2 has completely sublimated, your teacher will give you permission to drink your punch. • If you drink it before your teacher tells you to, you could damage your mouth and tongue due to the extremely cold temperature of the dry ice.

  19. Activity #2Witch’s Brew! Once your teacher sees that your dry ice has completely sublimated, your punch will not only be safe to drink, it will also be slightly carbonated, or bubbly. . .and very, very cold!

  20. Spooky Fun with Static Electricity

  21. Teacher Demonstration is Now!

  22. Activity #3Static Electricity Ghosts! How Does It Work? When you rub the balloon through your hair, invisible electrons (with a negative charge) build up on the surface of the balloon. The electrons have the power to pull very light objects (with a positive charge) toward them—in this case, the little ghost!
