  3. Uniformitarianism • The idea that geologic processes occurring now are the same as those in the past • According to uniformitarianism, a geologic change happens gradually • A scientist who outlined uniformitarianism in 1788 was James Huton

  4. Catastrophism • Is the principle that states that all geologic change occurs suddenly • A catastrophe would happen • Charles Lyell published Principles of Geology from 1830-1833 • The science that combines uniformitarianism plus catastrophism is called modern geology.
