    1. San Diego EMS and Fire Services Group Members: Angela Zhang Matthew Waller My name is Matthew Waller and this is my partner Angela Zhang. Over the next 10 weeks we will be working hand in hand with the San Diego EMS and Fire Services. Our mentors are John Pringle, who works for the Emergency Medical Services and Fire-Rescue Department. Greg George, who is a firefighter/paramedic. And Doug Palmer, who works at Calitt2. We also have the help of many more individuals throughout the medical and fire department. Our first project assigned to us is to transmit an ECG so that is may be sent via e-mail to a Doctor at a hospital. My name is Matthew Waller and this is my partner Angela Zhang. 2. AGENDA Tasks Completed Technical Overview Gantt Chart Goals for next week In our presentation today we will refresh your memory of the background of our sponsor and the problem they face in the field. We will show you our timeline of events. We will discuss our tasks that we have performed this week and the technical content. 3. Tasks Completed Received PBX and began testing with EKG and laptop We researched different telephone simulators and found multiple simple circuits to try and replace bulky PBX. Researched RS232 Over the past couple of weeks, we have received the PBX (public branch exchange) from china and began testing it. We have found a couple of designs of simple circuits to try and replace the bulky PBX. And Finally we finished up the research on the RS232. 4. Technical Overview Received PBX Began Testing Test 1 Test 2 To begin with I have talked with an engineer at Zoll, which is the manufacturing company of the EKG machine. He told me that the software that they provide is online. I am currently having trouble interfacing my computer with the EKG machine. However, we have made progress with the fax function using the pbx. We have decided this is a more suitable way to proceed using the fax over the RS232 since we are unable to obtain the data specifications to move on. Unfortunaetly we can’t attain the data specs and how they process their information. Test 1, make sure at least 2 ports works Test 2, use FAX machine to simulate the EKG MONITOR TEST. The fax number is the number of the port that connected to the laptop. To begin with I have talked with an engineer at Zoll, which is the manufacturing company of the EKG machine. 5. Final Test Our Final test resulted in plugging the EKG monitor and the laptop into the PBX. This test was successful. It takes under 1min 30sec to acquire the signal and transmit it. The only problem with this pbx is that it is a little stubborn. If you don’t accept the fax a certain way or time it does not receive it. PBX is bulky 8.5 x 5” and 1.5” thick Our Final test resulted in plugging the EKG monitor and the laptop into the PBX. This test was successful. 6. So as you can see, once these read outs are in the computer all that needs to be done is forwarding an e-mail to the hospital where the doctors can display it on their giant monitors and diagnosis the patient before they even arrive. Saving valuable time. 7. Block Diagram In our case, the diagram is as this . No phone line, so we float the input port. And, we only need two ports, so float port3 and port4. Port1 connect to the EKG monitor and port 2 connect to laptop. The PBX will give the dial tone to signal the fax of the monitor, when the monitor require to send a fax to the extension number of the laptop. Once the dial tone is received by the sending part, the fax of monitor begin to send data, the laptop is ready to receive fax. Of course, we need to enable the fax receiving function of Windows XP. Then, we are done. In our case, the diagram is as this . No phone line, so we float the input port. And, we only need two ports, so float port3 and port4. 8. Schematic of PBX Port1 connect to the EKG machine, port2 to laptop We are not gonna explain the detail of the schematic. Just introduce the two important ics. IC1 is a DTMF (dial tone, muti-frequency )decoder, XEN-for clock output control, GT start for the chip-timer, EN for the decoder output control terminal IC2 has a 4to16 line decoder with 4inputs and 16 outputs, the signals from the output( IC1 D0 to D3) to the A-D INPUTS of ic2 is binary numbers and the output of ic2 is analog.(voltage) For example, port1 to call port 2, kp1 offhook, port 1 first pick at this time machine, the Route of about 20 mA current, in R2 as a result of pressure drop (about 0.7 V) to Optocoupler (PC2 ).. D0 to D3 for the binary code output, when the successful decoding, DV pin was???, D3 ~ D0 output 0,001 yards, VT3 saturated conduction, IC2 (12) feet grounding; VT2 saturated conduction, (23) foot jump into a low-level. IC2 for the 4 / 16 line decoder CD4514, A ~ D for the binary code input, the corresponding received YN9101 the D0 to D3, the latch control-ST = 1, A-D figures were latches. Y0 ~ Y15 for the decoder output, EN = 1:00 prohibit output, as EN = 0, D ~ A with 0001 binary-code input, output Y1 - decoding was???, VT8 conduction, drivers Relay KP2 pull-in. Phone 2, as KP2 Contact Access ringing voltage, a continuous vibration ringtones, phone 2 if this extraction machine, the current Route double (40 mA), R1 as a result of the pressure drop Optocoupler PC1 conduction, VT1 ensuing on-saturated, J-driven pull-in relays. Normally closed contact J-1 break, cutting IC1, IC2 the power supply; J-2 break, cut off phone 2 and ringing voltage connections, ringing signal disappeared, then phone 1,2 parallel direct calls. If the phone 2 No pick machine, phone 1 pick in the machine, R2 will not have a pressure drop, SCR1 without triggering the current deadline, phone 2 and ringing voltage is disconnected. 9. Alternate Solution to PBX Two-Way automatic ring down unit Instant off-hook ring-down access between two telephone sets or equivalent devices One solution is to replace the PBX with a telephone line simulator. Displayed here. I have tested this out in my lab down at SIO. Does not have the problem like the PBX. Only two connections. No need to dial a specific number. And all you have to do is click the receive button and fax will be received. Before we go out and purchase these devices. We want to try and implement our own circuit. 10. Schematic of simple circuit First circuit, simple wire with resistor and battery. Talking over the phones is easy. You put DC current through the phone and it transmits and receives audio. So two phones and a current source (about 25mA) all in series will give you a talking circuit. A suitable current source can be as simple as a 9V battery and a series resistor whose value is adjusted (with both phones offhook) till about 25mA flows. Talking over the phones is easy.
