  2. What is Deforestation? Deforestation is the action of cutting, clearing, or removal of a rainforest or forest.

  3. Why is it a problem? • Deforestation is the main leading cause to global climate change. • Without the tree’s providing shade, the soil becomes spoiled. • Animals become extinct. • Plants that provide medicine disappear. • Natives loose the land they live on. • There are little to no trees left that can clean out the CO2 that deforestation creates. • Deforestation releases 1.5 billion tons carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.

  4. Disappearing Rainforests • 50% of Earth’s plant life is in rainforests. Forests once covered 14% of Earth’s land surface. Now they cover less then 6%. • Every second, one and a half acres of forests are cut down.

  5. Reasons for Deforestation • Logging • Mining • Oil and Gas extraction • Cattle ranching • Agriculture: Cash Crops • Local, National, International factors

  6. What do rainforests/forests do? • Protects us from the world’s global warming. • Converts Carbon Dioxide into breathable air and plant matter. • Feeds bodies of water. • Provides homes for animals, insects, and Natives.

  7. Converting Carbon Dioxide • Trees take in Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere, and transforms it into plant material and fresh air.

  8. Feeding Bodies of Water • Trees also take in water from underground and releases it into the air to feed rivers, lakes, and irrigation systems.

  9. Providing Homes • Natives- At one time almost 10 million native Indians occupied the lands of the South America Rainforest. Now there are less then 250,000. • Insects- More then 50% of Earth’s Insect species live in the rainforests. Many species have vanished and/or in danger due to deforestation.

  13. Solutions • To reduce the need for more logging, start using recycled paper. The easiest way to save a tree is to switch to completely recycled computer paper. • Before buying wood, check the Forest Stewartship Council page to see if your wood is environmentally friendly. • Stop junk mail that wastes paper by stopping catalogues that you don’t need.
