hands-on and interactive nature • built up of a wide range of activities in various formats • small workshop sessions as well as conventional (public) lectures and debates • Paper sessions • Face to face dialogue • all zooming in on particular aspects of festival management, including artistic vision, political and social responsibility, internationalization, networking, audience development, renewal and sustainability.

professional and extremely generous guidance of renowned festival managers • Bernard Faivre d'Arcier (former Director of the Festival d'Avignon), Rose Fenton (co-founder of LIFT, London International Theatre Festival), Gerard Mortier (Director of the Opéra National de Paris), Nele Hertling (Director of the "Berlin Artist Program" of the DAAD), Brian McMaster (Director of Edinburgh International Festival), Tom Stromberg (Director EXPO Hannover 2000 art program), Gavin Henderson (Principal of Trinity College of Music in London), Tzvetelina Iossifova (Co-Director of the Red House Center for Culture and Debate in Sofia), Nevenka Koprivsek (Director of Bunker Productions in Ljubljana).
Participants include everyone from students of arts management to managers working for established organizations and others launching new events. • They are asked to present a proposal for a new festival or event, or to suggest how to renew an existing one. • These papers that allow a focused selection are used as references during the entire workshop.
A separate edition of EFA BOOKS is dedicated to the Atelier and will be published by October 2008: Cahier de l‘Atelier
Next European Atelier will take place in April / May 2009 in Varna, Bulgaria
Timeline of the project: • September 2008: Open Call will be published on the EFA site • Mid December 2008: Deadline for applications • Mid January 2009: selected participants will be announced • April / May 2009: 2nd Edition of the European Atelier in Varna
