  2. The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools • Housed at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services and School of Education • Established in February 2001 • Funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

  3. Protect and Promote the Health of Children By: • Testing model programs • Analyzing options for organizing and financing school health • Researching issues and publicize effective programs • Informing policymaker and the public

  4. Caring for Kids Grant Initiative • $3.4 million dollar RWJF Funded Grant Initiative to expand mental and dental health services through school-based health centers • 3 year grant • 15 funded sites: 7 dental 8 mental

  5. School-Based Health Centers(SBHC) Today • 1,500 SBHC nationwide • Elementary, High School, Middle School

  6. School-based Health Center Model • They are located in schools • Parents sign written consents • An advisory board of community representatives, parents, youth and family organizations • Clinical services are the responsibility of a qualified health provider

  7. School-based Health Center Model • The health center works cooperatively with school nurses, coaches, counselors, classroom teachers, and school principals and their staff • A multidisciplinary team care for students (NP, MSWs, MD, HE) • The health center provides a comprehensive range of services
