Agenda • Welcome!!!!! • Thank you to SDCOE, Inelda Luna, Caron Leiber, Stephanie Ferriera, Claudia Miramontes, Ana Arias and Sandy Forrest • Our goal for today is to answer the following questions: • What exactly is Side By Side? • Why should we use Side By Side? • How do you read Side by Side? • How can Side by Side be used as a powerful instructional tool?

  3. What is Side by Side? A document created by SDCOE to visuallyaddress the California English Language Arts Standards by levels of language acquisition at each grade level.

  4. How is the document organized? In the following grade spans: K-2 3-5 Grade 6

  5. Why should we use Side By Side? To facilitate differentiation of the California English Language Arts Standards for English Learners…..

  6. Key Point: Side By Side can assist us in “building on what students already know in order to get where we want to go”!

  7. How do you read Side By Side? Horizontal reading = differentiation and progression towards ELA grade level content standards.

  8. Backwards mapping demonstrates prerequisite skills embedded in the standards.

  9. Horizontally there is a focus on ELA standards…..

  10. Vertically there is a focus on skill development based on levels of language proficiency.

  11. How can we use Side By Side?

  12. The meat of our work together today will focus on: How to use this tool to provide specific, sequential and meaningful English language arts and English language development instruction to English learners in order to improve student achievement and success! Let’s dig in!
