  1. Ghiandola mammaria/mammella: è una ghiandola tubulo-alveolare composta, posta sulla superficie ventrale dell’animale; secerne il latte.

  2. Alveolo (acino): la struttura di base nella secrezione del latte; è un sacco a fondo cieco che consiste di un unico strato di cellule secernenti (epitelio ghiandolare) disposte intorno al lume. Le cellule secernenti sono circondate da una rete di cellule (mioepiteliali) contrattili, responsabili dell’eiezione lattea.
