  1. Effect of Social Networks on Irish Migrants

  2. The number of Irish moving abroad rose by 16 per cent in 2011 with 46,600 Irish people migrating, of that 20,600 were women. • For my case study I am looking at the effect of social networking sites on Irish migrants. • I will be focusing on Irish females, between the ages of 20 and 35, who have lived abroad.

  3. According to 2012 statistics from the PEW Research Centre 75% of women who use the internet use social networking sites, 12% more than the male internet user.

  4. All participants agreed that though the medium is convenient for staying • connected with people at home it should not be used as a substitute for real • life interactions.

  5. According to PEW; women are more active on social networking • sites with more than half of the internet users logging onto the sites once a day.

  6. Barry Wellman points out that; “…regardless of what revolutions occur, in terms of society, economy, polity or technology, communities will find new ways to re-invent itself and fit into the societal strata – such is human nature.”
