Integrated Watershed Management Studies showed that non-point source pollutants (over 50% nutrients) were being received by the Xiamen Sea through Jiulong River and its drainage basins network upstream; continuing to threaten the marine environmental quality even if Xiamen fully controlled its local pollutant sources.
