  1. WebinarPredictions 2015: New Software Platforms Will Drive Internet of Things Adoption Frank E. Gillett, VP & Principal Analyst February 9, 2015. Call in at 12:55 p.m. Eastern time #IoTPredix15 John C. McCarthy, VP & Principal Analyst Michele Pelino, Principal Analyst

  2. Agenda • Changing IoT requirements and dynamics • Four predictions on IoT and their implications

  3. What is the IoT? IoT combines sensors, communications, and analytics applications so that firms can better optimize the utilization of their offerings, and provide differentiated products and services to better engage customers

  4. Customers are changing their behavior faster than firms can change their business model, processes, and technology 1 Forrsights Business Decision-Makers Survey, Q4 2012. Base 1,014 North American & European enterprise business-decision makers 2 Forrsights Services Survey, Q3 2013. Base: 1,050 North American and European enterprise services decision-makers 3 Base: 165 Managers and above who are responsible for mobile strategy. Source: A commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of AT&T, August, 2013

  5. Software is a strategic asset, not an operational nice to have • The Home Depot acquired Black Locus to better leverage analytics for pricing and agile decision making Heightened expectations around mobile Pervasive Analytics/Big Data Software-is-the-brand! • USAA had 120 million mobile deposits within 18 months of introduction 6X what it planned for • Trane has offered a new tablet-based selling configuration tool to resellers shorting the sales cycle and driving 30% increase in order size Digitization of processes Smart products/M2M • Maersk has smart enabled 9 million containers and charges a premium for guaranteed service quality

  6. “10 years ago inside GE, we would say software is just not our business. Now I think it's maybe one of the most important themes around the company… I'm now going back to school on software and analytics” Jeffrey Immelt, CEO General Electric

  7. B2C is the earthquake B2B is the Tsunami that follows

  8. The age of the customer drives Agile manufacturing

  9. Internet of Things: from macro to micro Source: October 31, 2014, “Mapping The Connected World” Forrester report

  11. IoT deployment plans vary by industry

  12. Agenda • Changing IoT requirements and dynamics • Four predictions on IoT and their implications

  13. Initial IoT value comes from instrumenting assets: Improving maintenance and utilization Driving down costs More valuable opportunities of IoT evolve to include: Creating differentiated connected products Transforming customer engagement with new business models 1) The IoT focus will remain on cost savings, rather than pivot to business transformation

  14. 1) IoT focus will remain on cost savings, rather than pivot to business transformation Implications: CIOs and CTOs need to focus on long-term business flexibility, not just cost savings Over time, the need to handle increasing volatility will drive IoT investments

  15. Initial industry conversation focused on network infrastructure and hardware components Sensors, edge devices, and gateways In 2015 focus shifts to creating IoT software platforms to provision and manage a diverse set of elements Networks, devices, and applications 2) IoT competition will shift from hardware to cloud-based IoT software and service platforms

  16. IoT platforms provide five key functions Enterprise Systems Connected Devices IoT Software Platform ERP Build Analyze Field service Manage Secure CRM Connect Partners Source: Upcoming, “Internet Of Things Software Platforms Simplify Deployment” Forrester report

  17. Different camps provide separate functionality TelcosAT&T, Orange, Telefonica, Verizon Wireless ManagementJasper, Aeris, KORE, Ericsson Enterprise SW IBM, Microsoft,SAP, Salesforce SIs Accenture, IBM, Infosys, PWC Generalist Platforms PTC, Ayla Networks, M2Mi, Xively Vertical IoT PlatformsGE Arrayent, DriveFactor, iControl Build Analyze Manage Secure Connect Source: Upcoming, “Internet Of Things Software Platforms Simplify Deployment” Forrester report

  18. 2) IoT competition will shift from hardware to cloud-based software and service platforms Implications: CIOs will have to monitor mix of start-ups, big-name vendors, and product/industrial companies that focus on IoT software

  19. Firms are deploying many IoT applications Source: October 31, 2013, “Mapping The Connected World” Forrester report

  20. Stage 1 (Through 2016): Standalone IoT platform silos with duplicate enterprise functionality • Standalone IoT platforms implemented in silos • Platform generalists, wireless management specialists, and vertical players focus on connecting and operating IoT devices • Enterprise software vendors enter the picture at end of this stage Source: Upcoming, “Internet Of Things Software Platforms Simplify Deployment” Forrester report

  21. Stage 2 (2016 to 2020): Interconnected silos with overlapping enterprise functionality • IoT platform vendors increase APIs and interconnect support • Enterprise software vendors extend IoT application and analytics • Corporate roadmaps leverage IoT platforms in the short run and enterprise software vendors in the longer term Source: Upcoming, “Internet Of Things Software Platforms Simplify Deployment” Forrester report

  22. Stage 3 (2020 and beyond): Integrated IoT and enterprise platforms • IoT platform vendors focus on core connectivity, security, and management • Enterprise software vendors acquire IoT platform vendors • Deep integration with application and analytics platforms of enterprise software vendors (e.g. IBM, Microsoft, SAP) Source: Upcoming, “Internet Of Things Software Platforms Simplify Deployment” Forrester report

  23. Initial focus has been on the IoT connectivity “Billions and billions” of devices connected to the Internet Vendors and media will evolve focus beyond connectivity to show the growth of IoT solutions Number of IoT applications Variety of IoT applications across many vertical markets Actual customer case studies and examples 3) IoT metrics will pivot from “billions of devices” to tens of apps and hundreds of customers

  24. 3) IoT metrics will pivot from “billions of devices” to tens of apps and hundreds of customers Implications: This shift will change the buying criteria for the traditional product development groups away from hardware into software where BT can provide the assessment skills

  25. Today’s telco or cable home automation solutions are walled gardens New approach lets consumers or third parties integrate multiple products into a single solution Help consumers retrofit or integrate assets they currently own, rather than buying new products Android Auto, Apple’s HomeKit framework, Samsung’s SmartThings 4) Consumer IoT aggregation will force brands to express themselves through new platforms

  26. 4) Consumer IoT aggregation will force brands to express themselves through new platforms Implications: Technology strategists can provide the API and integration skills to help the business develop its offerings as the control point and not another siloed proprietary offerings

  27. CIOs need to reach out to product groups to help with…. Technology management executives will need to adjust skills and processes to support IoT technology Technology management teams will also be responsible for IoT security The Target breach shows how important this will be Move to real-time software architecture to implement effective security Software-defined, real-time, sense and response architecture becomes the security model

  28. Competition shifts from hardware to software and service platforms Initial priorities are on hardware (e.g. sensors, edge devices, gateways) Focus will shift to creating IoT software platforms that manage devices and integrate data Monitor IoT platform offerings from big-name tech vendors to find best partner Services opportunities start as project-based implementations to connect devices and evolve to managing services enabled by software platforms
