  3. INTRODUCTION… • 1. Pride is something we all struggle with! Rom 12:3 • 2. This attitude has NO PLACE in the Christian Character! Rom 8:29 • 3. But one may ask WHY? What is so dangerous about Pride? • a. The world greatly encourages this attitude!! • b. One may observe, “It does not seem so dangerous”

What is so dangerous about Pride? • a. The world greatly encourages this attitude!! • b. One may observe, “It does not seem so dangerous” • 4. Nebuchadnezzar provides us great “Case Study” on the dangerous effects of a Proud attitude! • 5. Our Objective is to: • a. Define “Pride” • b. Briefly review God’s instructions on Pride • c. Notice 4 Dangers of a proud attitude from Nebuchadnezzar • d. Apply these lessons to our lives!

  5. I. Definition of “Pride” • A. Secular Definition: • 1. Webster's: • an unduly high opinion of oneself; exaggerated self-esteem; conceit; haughty behavior resulting from this; arrogance • 2. Am. Heritage: • Arrogant or disdainful conduct or treatment; haughtiness.

Pride exemplified: Daniel 3:15 & 4:30 • 2. He admitted it was his problem:Daniel 4:37! • 3. His pride caused him some Major Spiritual Problems!

  12. III. Nebuchadnezzar’s Pride! • A. He Forgot God’s Great Blessings! – Daniel 2 • 1. God blessed him Greatly! • a. Vs. 1-45 - A wonderful Dream & its interpretation • b. Vs. 37-38 - Power, kingdom were all from God • 2. He Acknowledged God & Praised Him! vs.46-47 • 3. But… he forgot God, unthankful and did not follow Him Ch.3-4

  13. III. Nebuchadnezzar’s Pride! • A. He Forgot God’s Great Blessings! – Daniel 2 • 1. God blessed him Greatly! • a. Vs. 1-45 - A wonderful Dream & its interpretation • b. Vs. 37-38 - Power, kingdom were all from God • 2. He Acknowledged God & Praised Him! vs.46-47 • 3. But… he forgot God, unthankful and did not follow Him Ch.3-4 • B. He Ignored God’s Instruction – Daniel 3 • 1. God instructed him against Idolatry • a. Vs. 1-18 - He build an idol and demanded its worship • b. Vs. 19-25 -God intervened & saved the lives of those that resisted • 2. He acknowledged and praised God & ordered respect! Vs.26-30 • 3. But again…he forgot God, and did not pursue Him! 4:8,25

  14. III. Nebuchadnezzar’s Pride! • C. He Ignored God’s Warnings! – Daniel 4:4-27 • 1. God provided him a strong warning to Repent! • a. Vs. 4-26 - A fearful dream & clear interpretation • b. Vs. 27 - Daniel begged him to repent! • 2. It appears that he may have listened for a short time Vs. 29 • 3. But again…he forgot God and did not turn from his Sin! Vs.28-33

  15. III. Nebuchadnezzar’s Pride! • C. He Ignored God’s Warnings! – Daniel 4:4-27 • 1. God provided him a strong warning to Repent! • a. Vs. 4-26 - A fearful dream & clear interpretation • b. Vs. 27 - Daniel begged him to repent! • 2. It appears that he may have listened for a short time Vs. 29 • 3. But again…he forgot God and did not turn from his Sin! Vs.28-33 • D. He was Punished by God! – Daniel 4:28-33 • 1. God Punished him! • a. Vs. 30-31 - In the very act arrogance, God struck him with madness • b. Vs. 32 – God humbled him; put him down to the level of an animal! • 2. The Punishment was a direct result of his PRIDE • 3. Thankfully he repented and made a significant change! Vs. 34-37

  16. III. Nebuchadnezzar’s Pride! • E. Pride caused Nebuchadnezzar great spiritual difficulty! • 1. He Forgot God’s Great Blessings! – Daniel 2 • 2. He Ignored God’s Instruction – Daniel 3 • 3. He Ignored God’s Warnings! – Daniel 4:4-27 • 4. He was Punished by God! – Daniel 4:28-33 • F. Pride will cause US the same great spiritual difficulty!

  17. IV. The Danger of Pride to US! • A. We will Forget God’s Blessings! • 1. The Proud have no Need for God! • a. They are self-made, “look what they did…” • b. Rich Fool: Luke 12:13-21 • 2. The Proud will not thankfully, honor God and this leads directly to disobedience! Deut 8

  18. IV. The Danger of Pride to US! • A. We will Forget God’s Blessings! • 1. The Proud have no Need for God! • a. They are self-made, “look what they did…” • b. Rich Fool: Luke 12:13-21 • 2. The Proud will not thankfully, honor God and this leads directly to disobedience! Deut 8 • B. We will Ignore God’s Instruction • 1. The Proud will not follow God’s word! • a. Saul: 1 Samuel 15 • b. Israel & Judah: Hosea 5:5, 7:10 • 2. Pride is an essential element of False Teaching & Error • a. 1 Timothy 6:3-5, 4 • b. Those in Error demote God’s instructions to “recommendations” and elevate their opinions to “law”! Romans 10:1-2

  19. IV. The Danger of Pride to US! • C. We will Ignore God’s Warnings! • 1. The Proud will Discount God’s Plea for Repentance! • a. God is patient not wanting any to perish – 2 Peter 3:9 • b. Pride will thwart the humility required to obey the Gospel! – Luke 9:23 • 2. Pride can lead us into dangerous grounds! 1 Cor 10:6-11,12-13 • 3. Pride will make us self-righteous! Luke 18:9-14, 2 Cor 13:5

Luke 18:9-14, 2 Cor 13:5 • D. We will Suffer Punishment! • 1. The Proud will suffer greatly in this life! • Pr 11:2, 13:10, 16:18, 29:23 • 2. The Proud will SUFFER ETERNAL PUNISHMENT in HELL! • “For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up," Says the LORD of hosts,..” Malachi 4:1

  21. Conclusion… 1. Pride is something we all struggle with! Rom 12:3 2. God clearly condemns this attitude & we should actively oppose any thoughts of arrogance, pride, or haughtiness!

Forget God & His Blessings - No grateful desire to follow Him! • b. Disregard God’s Instruction - Ripe for Error & Worldliness • c. Disregard God’s Warnings - Stumble into snares & temptations • d. Punishment is Assured!
