The Albany Congress and Franklin’s Albany Plan of Union (New York) • England wanted the colonies to agree to a plan for common defense • The Iroquois were also invited in hopes of an alliance • Benjamin Franklin suggested that colonial assemblies elect council members to organize armies, collect taxes, negotiate with native Americans, and make decisions regarding western settlements • The Congress adopted the plan, but the colonial assemblies did not; they felt it gave too much control to a central power • Benjamin Franklin called them “weak noodles”
