This study investigates the effects of bitumen exposure on nasal inflammation in construction workers, comparing workers with low and high exposure levels. The population consisted of 55 low exposure, 202 moderate, and 172 high exposure workers. Key analyses included neutrophil counts and cytokine levels (IL-8, IL-1β, TNF-α) in nasal lavage fluids pre and post-shift. Results revealed a small increase in neutrophils post-shift in high exposure groups, suggesting potential irritative effects distinct from allergies.

Conclusion NALF • Small increase of neutrophils after high airborne bitumen exposure during shift in nasal lavage • Although no direct comparison was made, irritative effects can possibly be differentiated from allergic effects
