Agricultural Equipment Services Overview • People working in this field provide agricultural equipment sales, service, and parts to the agricultural community. • They apply professional, scientific, technical, and interpersonal skills to diagnose, repair, and provide proper maintenance to agricultural equipment.

Agricultural Equipment Services Overview Continued... • This line of work probably seems very inviting and interesting to you, however the industry as a whole – equipment dealerships, farms, wholesale parts distributors, etc. work year round and get very little time off and often work 50 hrs. + per week. • Less than 2% of the total U.S. population is engaged in agriculture, still there is a promising future.

  4. Agricultural Equipment Services Trends • Skills in using computerized diagnostic equipment is becoming more important. • Post secondary education in agricultural engineering or diesel mechanics is a huge asset. • Jobs are concentrated in small towns and rural communities.

  8. Agricultural Equipment Career Tracks • Sales Representative – Sell agricultural equipment to area farmers, transfer equipment from area dealerships, sell additional attachments while at the same time “drumming up” business for the service and parts departments at the equipment dealership.

Agricultural Equipment Career Tracks • Service Technician – Maintains, repairs, and overhauls farm machinery, such as tractors, self propelled forage harvesters, combines, tillage equipment, corn planters, forage wagons, grain drills and round and square balers. • Uses computerized diagnostics • Provides service in house and on the road

Agricultural Equipment Career Tracks • Agricultural Engineer – They apply knowledge of engineering technology and biological science to agriculture, while designing agricultural equipment and machinery, as well as agricultural structures. • Specialties include power systems and machinery design • Work in research and development, production, sales and management positions.

Agricultural Equipment Career Tracks • Parts Counter Sales Person – Providing customers with needed parts, shipping and receiving of parts, customer and wholesale billing, providing customer service, answering phones, cross referencing other brands, answering questions, making chains and hydraulic hoses, re-stocking shelves, merchandising new products, and using computers to aid in daily tasks.

Agricultural Equipment Career Tracks • Truck Driver -Transporting agricultural equipment between dealerships and the customers. • Must have a minimum of Class B license and for tractor trailer a Class A specialized license. • Aware of weight and width of equipment, load capacity of truck, state laws, and have a good sense of direction and ability to read maps.

Agricultural Equipment Career Tracks • Merchandising – Ability to select and promote products that will sell, develop pricing system, take customer orders, engage in marketing, design displays that are appealing to the eye, and sell not only in the store, but also online, at fairs, and local events. • Have a “Special of The Week.” • Keep a good stock and a variety of sizes and styles, as well as the latest and greatest!

Agricultural Equipment Careers Compensation • The following are a sampling of the average hourly wage ranges for a sampling of agricultural equipment professions: • Sales Representative – based on commission • Service Technician- $10.50 to $18.50 hourly • Customer Service Rep - $9.00 to $12.50 hourly and commission possibilities • Parts Counter Sales Person - $9.50 to $15.00 hourly • Truck Driver - $9.50 to $10.50 hourly

Agricultural Equipment Careers Compensation Continued... • Starting salary range for students with specialized degrees • AAS in Agricultural Engineering Technology $22,500 - $37,500 • AAS in Diesel Technology $35,000 - $37,500 • BT in Agricultural Business Mgmt. $28,500 - $47,500 • BT in Agricultural Equipment Technology $32,500 - $37,500

  17. Agricultural Equipment Tips On Getting Hired • A lot depends on what aspect of the diverse industry you are planning to pursue. • You’ll need a lot of ENTHUSIASM • You’ll need a lot of personal dedication and industry training. • Knowledgeable of a diverse line of products and equipment.

Agricultural Equipment Tips On Getting Hired • Willingness to work with others is a MUST! • Able to provide customer service • Post secondary education is becoming more and more of a determining factor in getting hired in the agricultural equipment industry. • Farm background and work experience on resume is another huge plus!

Agricultural Equipment The Major Players • Deere & Company: Most commonly known to the industry as John Deere. • Solid, Stable, Still John Deere Since 1837 www.deere.com • CNH: Big mergers took place and today this company is the home to Case, International, Fiat, New Holland. • AGCO: Another company where recent mergers took place and today this company is home to Massy Ferguson, Deutz Allis, White, Same’, and Caterpillar.
