  4. CLEANING PROFESSION: A GENERAL OVERVIEW • Cleaning is an exercise as old as human existence and its prospect endures for as long as this existence lasts.

  5. Cleanliness is next to godliness; apart from the hazards dirty environment posses, it affects the overall output and performance

  6. Implementation of new procedures, equipment and cleaning supplies was found to decrease the level of air borne dust inside the building by 52%, Total Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC) concentration decreases by 49%, total bacteria decreased by 40% and fungi Colony Forming Unit (CFU) decreased by 61%.

  7. Defining Healthy High Performance Cleaning This is a process that reduces the overall impact on human health and environment by taking a holistic view of facilities, it mission and the activities that takes place within the facility.

  8. The success of a healthy high performance hinges not on products but on a larger principle-stewardship.

  9. Stewardship Principle Below are ten (10) stewardship principles to follow: • Go beyond appearance • Take a holistic approach • Educate and communicate

  10. Schedule routine maintenance • Plan for accidents • Minimize exposure • Minimize residue • Ensure safety • Reduce all pollutants • Safe disposal

  11. CLEANING PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITY • The importance of cleaning personnel in maintaining a healthy indoor environment should be elevated in stature throughout the facility. The result is improved communications which in turns means there are fewer problems to be solved more quickly and less aggressive to toxic materials.

  12. OCCUPANT RESPONSIBILITY • Cleaning spills of coffee and beverages as quickly as possible because it gets more difficult to remove as it steeps into the carpet and dries

  13. Occupant should not eat at work and leave food crumbs in or behind the desk as it attracts insects and rodents. • Those who work in clutter that generates excessive trash and don’t recycle, extends the duration of a custodial worker

  14. Note: everyone must work together to reduce our environmental impact and create the safest and healthiest working environment

  15. PROFESSIONAL ETHICS • This refers to the rules and regulations guiding the behaviors and conducts of the operators in the industry. They are inexhaustible list of them but below are the few vital ones: punctuality, honesty/trustworthiness, diligence/hard work, ability to learn fast, independent-minded, humility, teachable, flair for team work and respect for superior.

  16. PROSPECT OF CLEANING PROFESSION This simply means future of this profession. Clothing; as long as people keep wearing cloths, they must patronize the laundry.

  17. Similarly as long as business are operating, cleaning outfits must continue to be relevant; as a service oriented industry, their services will always be needed

CLEANING PROCESS AND PROCEDURES General Office Space Cleaning • Purpose: To effectively clean and maintain common areas, private offices, open offices, conference rooms, general and shared space cleaning. • Preparation: gather required equipment, tools and supplies; then move to assigned work area.

  19. Steps • Ensure safety • Start high and dry • Empty and clean every trash cans (recycle containers if required) • Dry clean floors • Damp/we clean floors • Pack and go

  20. LAUNDRY AND DRY CLEANING SERVICES • Laundry is the washing of cloths and linens often carried out in a room or area of a home which is reserved for that purpose which the room can be referred to as laundry.

  21. LAUNDRY PROCESS • This includes washing (usually with water containing detergent or other chemical), agitating, rinsing, drying and pressing (ironing). The temperature of the washing water should be slightly above room temperature to eliminate any microorganism present while the chemical serves as a dissolvent for stains

  22. CHEMICALS • The essence of the chemical is for stain removal; such chemicals are some compound in soap root or yucca root or ash lye. Although typical modern washing machines use synthetic powdered or liquid laundry detergent in place of more traditional soap.

  23. Common Problems (Associated with dry cleaning) • Accidental shrinking of garment • Color bleeding

Common tips • Cloths brought for dry cleaning should be collected and duly receipted; indicating job to be done on the clothes, date of collection, payment and owners information. • Check the clothes for any likely stains (especially if none was reported by the owner), return anything found in the pocket to the owner. • tag the cloth to avoid mix up

Attention spots while washing • shirts- armpit, shirt collar, lining, sleeves lining and hand cuffs • trouser- bottom lining, inners, sitting pads, kneel • towels and wrappers- edges and middle • suit and safari- hand, collar, laps and lining • Pay attention to starching and rinsing preference of each customer.

  26. GENERAL SAFETY IN CLEANING The essence of safety is to protect lives, maintain the company’s dignity and assets

  27. The use of safety caution cones to minimize slips, trip and fall. • All hazards must be properly positioned and labeled.

  28. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and use the right ones per job • Always take note of all the risk which may be involved in each stage and avoid them

  29. All work at height must be done with no such distraction as phone calls etc • All chemicals to be used must be correctly labeled with instructions on usage

  30. Any equipment which one has not been taught on usage must not be handled by such individual • In cases of chemical spillage into eyes, continuous flushing of eyes under a running tap is the first aide • Fire extinguisher must be ready available to remedy fire outbreak

  31. All the near miss event , incidence and accident must be recorded and reported to the superior • All electrical appliances in the room to be cleaned, must be put off before cleaning commence and turned on after cleaning

  33. Lists of common PPE required in cleaning • Face/eyes protection; goggles, face shield (for spills), nose mask, ear muffs/plugs, hard hat mouth guard etc • Body; apron, overall • Hand; gloves • Foot; foot guards (clogs)
