Cuba’s Government • Cuba’s government is considered a communist state because it is ruled by the nation’s Communist Party • Cuba’s government is Socialist, meaning that the state owns most of the property and means of production • Cuba’s government has an executive, legislative, and judicial branch

  3. Executive Branch • The Cuban president leads the country as both the chief of state and the head of the government • For almost fifty years, Fidel Castro ruled Cuba as its president • He resigned in 2008 due to health reasons • His brother, Raul, now rules as president

  5. Legislative and Judicial Branch • The National Assembly of Peoples Power acts as Cuba’s legislative branch • This is a unicameral (one house) body • The highest court is the People’s Supreme Court • The National Assembly of People’s Power elects the members of the supreme court

  6. Citizens • The state often imprissons those who speak out against the government • The people have little say in the government • Since the Communist Party controls every level of government, there is no real division of power • The president has almost unquestioned authority
