Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Art Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Visual/Spatial, Kinesthetic Lesson Abstract: Students will research, plan , create, and evaluate a papier mache’ mask. Materials Needed: 1 computer for each small group of students to be determined by the teacher, computer printer, paper, pencils, newspaper, paste for papier mache’, bowls for paste, scissors, masking tape, paint, add-on supplies (pipe cleaners, beads, pom poms, glitter, feathers, etc.), blender if available or large bowl for mixing paste, paper towels. Procedures: Students will work in small groups for planning their masks. They will participate in a WebQuest (the web address is below). The WebQuest will take students on an exploration of masks from various cultures as well as introduce them to the process of papier mache’. Students are to work in small groups while participating in the WebQuest. They will work in pairs for the first step of creating the papier mache’ masks which is while they are covering the balloon. After the papier mache’ balloon covering is dry and cut into 2 pieces, students will work on their own until the completion of their mask. For the final chapter which includes an analysis of one of the masks from their group, students will participate and contribute to a Voice Thread which is linked on the WebQuest.

Assessment: The student should research with a group, design a mask influenced by a part of a mask from another culture, and create a papier mache mask of their own. The student should complete a Mask Rubric. The student should complete their Mask Summary sheet. The student should contribute a comment to the VoiceThread.
