  1. “I am Not Ashamed…” Romans 1:16 Sermon #4 “Working Faith”

  2. What are We Doing? We are looking through the first 8 chapters of Romans to see Paul’s connection to the Good News and to consider our connection as well.

  3. It would be good if more people asked themselves what part they need to play in response to the good news. What is your connection to the good news? Who do you know that needs some good news and how do you share it with others?

  4. “Gospel” = Good News Fill in the blanks!! The good news is that the __________ that sin causes between us and God can be repaired by the _____of God through turning from wrong, choosing to do right, and showing ___________ to Christ as the leader of your life by ______to your old life, being _______ in water, and being raised to a new life of _____________ to God and His word.

  5. So Far Romans 1 – Sins of the Gentiles Romans 2 – Sins of the Jews. Romans 3:22-24 on Page 1751 “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

  6. Romans 3:29-31 “Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.”

  7. 4 Questions of Chapter 4 If I believe that Jesus has done everything that is needed to provide me with purity why should I strive for purity? Does grace give me license to sin? Can I trust that Jesus has really removed the penalty of my sin? Do I do right for the love of right or do I do right for reward?

  8. Historical Answer Abraham’s life is recorded in Genesis 11-25 and he is the one who was told that he would have descendants as numerous as the sands on the seashore and stars in the sky even though he had no children and was about 100 years old!

  9. Romans 4:1-3 Page 1751 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter? 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about--but not before God. 3 What does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." Justified – just-as-if-I-had Credited – added into his account even though he did not have it. Righteousness – in a right relationship through action!

  10. Faith Like Abraham In order for Abraham to have, and stay, in a right relationship with God what did Abraham need to do? He needed to believe that God was able and willing to have a relationship with him and that God would make the relationship possible. That is good news and it is at the core of the Easter message.

  11. Romans 4:4-17 Romans 4:4-8 speaks of the difference between wages and credit and he refers to David’s words in Psalm 32:1-2 to further make the point. 4:9-17 When did Abraham’s faith get credited to him as righteousness? According to 4:11-12 we can all call him father Abraham.

  12. Romans 4:18-25 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

  13. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

  14. Romans 4:25 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

  15. The Four Questions If I believe that Jesus has done everything that is needed to provide me with purity why should I strive for purity? Because Jesus paid for it with His life. Does grace give me license to sin? No, it provides motivation to not sin.

  16. The Four Questions Can I trust that Jesus has really removed the penalty of my sin? It is the only option since you cannot provide it yourself. Do I do right for the love of right or do I do right for reward? Do good and live right because of the relationship that God provides. This week take note of how and when your trust in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus leads you to action.

  17. Next Week: Romans Chapter 5 The Call to Rejoice!
