  1. Newlands Reclamation Act Named for Francis Newlands, a land speculator, who had hired engineers to study the possibility of building dams and other means of irrigation Brought water to the desert

  2. Residency Requirement -Number of years one is required to live in a state (before they are divorced) -Nevada changed their requirement to 6 weeks instead of 12 weeks Need a quick divorce- Go to Nevada!!!

  3. WFM- Western Federation of Miners A radical labor union that organized the miners and smelter workers of the Rocky Mountain states. Created in 1893 by the merger of several local miners' unions, the WFM had a reputation for violent strikes and militant action from its beginning.

Harold Smith -Opened Harold’s Club on Virginia Street and it became the first modern casino in Nevada -Harold developed a reputation for trying anything, including letting players bet on which hole a scampering field mouse would enter. (The stunt gained Harold’s its first national publicity) - All that remains of Harold’s is the old wagon-train mural, preserved at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

William Harrah -Created the Nevada Gaming Control Board in 1955, an organization used to regulate gaming in Nevada; as well as corruption and crime. -Reputation for running honest games and treating his customers and employees with fairness; first to invite African-American entertainers to perform in his casinos; removed the color and sexual barrier by hiring women as dealers -Opened Harrah's Club Bingo and Harrah's Lake Club at Lake Tahoe -Donated 175 vehicles to establish the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada

  11. “Father of Las Vegas” Bugsy Siegel -Siegel was an American gangster who was involved with Italian-American organized crime. Siegel was a major driving force behind large-scale development of Las Vegas. -Known as “The Father of Las Vegas." In 1946, Siegel used about $5 million to construct the first super-casino/hotel, the Flamingo.

  12. Francis Newland He was a United States Representative and Senator from Nevada. Known for his interest in irrigation and reclamation- Newlands Reclamation Act- 1902

Patrick McCarran -Was Nevada's first native-born U.S. Senator and one of Nevada's most powerful politicians -McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is named after the Senator and McCarran Blvd. is a major beltway in Reno. -Lobbied hard to bring more businesses and industries to southern Nevada- Aviation was one of his biggest platforms Airport One of two statues in the United States Capital Building to honor and represent Nevada

George Wingfield- "King George." -Banker, hotel owner, and political powerhouse -He owned twelve banks, a chain of gambling halls, many mines, a string of race horses and two Reno hotels, the Riverside and Golden. -Influential in developing Reno's gambling-and-divorce-related tourism -Among those who made fortunes in Nevada mines, Wingfield was unique in that he remained in the state with his money. 

  15. Steve Wynn -Casino resort developer, well known to have driven forward the expansion of Las Vegas, Nevada through the 1990’s. -Opened the Mirage, Treasure Island, Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas -Billionaire in 2004

William Nellis -Las Vegas Air Force Base was officially renamed Nellis Air Force Base -He flew sixty-nine missions over Europe and was shot down twice, surviving each crash -During the Battle of the Bulge, Lieutenant Nellis was killed in action over Bastogne. His sacrifice made him a local hero.

  17. Howard Hughes -Aviator, engineer, industrialist, film producer, film director , philanthropist, and one of the wealthiest people in the world. -He owned six casinos on the Las Vegas Strip as well as other hotel-casinos and businesses around the state. -Hughes was determined to rid Las Vegas of its ties to organized crime -brought credibility to casino gambling
