  2. Chinese Thinkers Main Idea: • After the Zhou dynasty weakened in the 500’s BC, violence became common. • Rulers sent out armies to destroy enemy states, and entire villages of men, women, and children were beheaded. • The Chinese started to look to new ways to restore order and peace.

  3. Chinese Thinkers Between 500–200 B.C. Chinese thinkers developed three major theories about how to create a peaceful society. • Confucianism • Daoism • Legalism

  4. Confucianism • All men with a talent for governing should take part in government. • “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Founder:Confucius Main Ideas: People should put their family and community first. Influence on Modern Life: Many Chinese today accept his idea of duty to family. His ideas helped open up government jobs to people with talent. More on pg. 236-237

  5. Daoism Why is Laozi often depicted on a water buffalo? Some legends state that Laozi rode his water buffalo westward into the great desert and disappeared after writing Dao De Jing. Founder:Laozi Main Ideas: People should give up worldly desires in favor of nature and the Dao (the proper “way”). Influence on Modern Life: Daoism teaches the importance of nature and encourages people to treat nature with respect and reverence. More on pg. 238-239

  6. Legalism Founder:Hanfeizi Main Ideas: Society needs a system of harsh laws and strict punishment. He believed people were naturally evil. Influence on Modern Life: Legalists developed laws that became an important part of Chinese history. More on pg. 239

  7. Major Changes in China Main Idea: Unrest in China helped Buddhism to spread.

Buddhism Founder: Siddhartha Gautama became known as the Buddha, or “Enlightened One.” Main Ideas: Buddha’s teachings is contained in the Four Noble Truths. • Life is full of suffering. • People suffer because they desire worldly things and self-satisfaction. • The way to end suffering is to stop desiring things. • The only way yo stop desiring things is to follow the Eightfold Path. After Buddha’s death, more and more people practiced Buddhism. disagreements arose and Buddhists split into two major groups: Theravada = Teachings of the elders and believe the Buddha is a great teacher, not a god. Mahayana – Teaches that Buddha is a god and the Eightfold path is too difficult so instead one should pray to Buddha and once they go to heaven they can work on the Eightfold path and reach Nirvana.

Buddhism The Eightfold Path: • Know and understand the Four Noble Truths. • Give up worldly things and don’t harm others. • Tell the truth, don’t gossip and don’t speak badly of others. • Don’t commit evil acts, like killing, stealing, or living an unclean life. • Do rewarding work. • Work for good and oppose evil. • Make sure your mind keeps your senses under control. • Practice meditation as a way of understanding reality.
