The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) "The contribution of carers is vital, both in the delivery of health and social care and to the wider economy, so it is unfortunate that many neglect their own health in order to fulfill this role. Some facts about carers • 10-12 % people (our patients) are carers • 6 million carers in the country • 4.3 million of working age • 1.25 million carers provide care for more then 50 hours/week. • Value of carers contribution £118 billion • 700,000 young carers • 138,000 carers in Herts, 5000 identified on GPs carer register, 3000 had flu vaccination

Effect of caring on carers and care workers • 40% carers have significant stress and/or depression • High incidence of self harm in young carers • Providing higher level of care is associated with 23% higher risk of stroke • Other problems- back pain/ musculoskeletal problems, sleep disturbance, migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, hernia etc

Social & economic affects of caring • 20% carers give up work to care • On average carers retire 8 years early • 87% households with working age carers looking after their partners , on one in the household is in the paid employment • Other effects- poverty, debt, poor diet, missing health care appointments • List is endless!

  10. What can GP’s do • Develop practice action plan to support carers • RCGP & PRTC action guide for GP’s and their practice staff • Identify, support & signpost carers • Examples of best practice Carer health checks Prescription breaks for carers – success in Cambridge & other regions

  11. Five key ways for GPs to support carers • Just listen! • Think of depression and other problems • Ask about finances • Signpost to services • Plan for emergencies

  12. Health and Social Bill Aims- • Give patients more choice • Give clinicians more control • Give organizations greater freedom from central control and political interference • Promote competition to improve patient care • Scrutiny by local authority through ‘Health and Well Being Board’

  13. The new NHS • White Paper 2010 - Puts patient and public first - Improve patient care - Allow GP’s to commission care - Involves local authority - Improves patient choice - Integrate health and social care

What will changes mean for the NHS • Giving responsibility for commissioning healthcare to GPs and their team • Creation of independent NHS Commissioning Board to allocate resources and oversee CCGs • Abolition of PCTs • Transfer of public health responsibilities to local authorities • Greater freedom for providers of healthcare • Promote competition and patient choice • Makes NHS more accountable to patient & public
