  1. A Faithful Prophetess Luke 2:36-38

  2. We find female prophets in both Testaments. • “Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time” (Judg 4:4). • Philip “had four virgin daughters who prophesied” (Acts 21:9).

  3. Prophecy was part of the Messianic Age. • “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord” (Mal 4:5). • Ann is the third prophet we’ve encountered in the Gospel of Luke. • “Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied” (Lk 1:67). • Simeon, although not referred to as a prophet, obviously prophesies (Lk2:25-35).

  4. Anna was greatly faithful!

  5. Faithful in Marriage vv 36-37

  6. “Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years.”

  7. The Bible does not present the view that faithful widows never remarry. • Rom. 7:2-3. • “I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully” (1 Tim 5:14). • But, Anna was married to her husband until his death!

  8. Scripture speaks of the permanence of marriage. • “What God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matt 19:6). • “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery” (Mk 10:11-12). • “A husband is not to divorce his wife” (1 Cor 7:11).

  9. Faithful in Worship v 37

  10. Anna did “not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.” • Anna apparently lived in the temple, and that was a “happening place” for one wanting to serve God. • God dwelt in the temple in a special way. • The first born son was presented to God at the temple. • When pilgrims came to worship, they came to the temple.

  11. Fasting was an important part of Anna’s worship. • “When He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry” (Matt 4:2). • “When they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed” (Acts 14:23).

  12. We need to think about fasting, too. • “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting” (Matt 6:16). • Fasting is doing without something to spend time with God.

  13. Prayer was an important part of Anna’s worship. • Prayer has long played an important role in the lives of God’s people. • “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed” (Mk 1:35). • “At midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25).

  14. Prayer should continue to play an important role in the lives of God’s people. • “When you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men” (Matt 6:5). • “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving” (Col 4:2).

  15. Faithful in Thanksgiving v 38a

  16. “And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord.”

  17. Throughout Scripture, we find Jesus being a reason for thanksgiving. • “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor15:57). • “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Cor 9:15).

  18. How grateful we should be for the gift of God’s Son! • There is no other love comparable to the love God portrayed when he sent Jesus (Jn 3:16). • There is salvation from every sin available only through Jesus (1 Jn 1:7). • There need be no dread of death because of Jesus (1 Cor 15:21-22).

  19. Faithful in Proclaiming v 38b

  20. She “spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”

  21. The early disciples certainly spoke of Jesus to all. • “If indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven” (Col 1:23). • “Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” (Col 1:28).

  22. Do you need to act on Jesus’ message of redemption?
